CoBloWriMo day 3's prompt is "Extant Garment," which I'm actually finding kind of difficult. Not because I don't have access to surviving historical clothing, but because I'm spoiled for choice. I've been privileged to visit some really stunning exhibits and even got a behind-the-scenes tour of the massive Winterthur collections...twice! I know a lot of my friends have gone overseas for study trips and visited famous European collections, but even though I haven't done that, I've still seen so many cool garments and objects, I simply cannot decide on a favorite one to share!
I mean, how could you pick?

And don't even get me started on Pinterest! I mean, sure, some things are mislabeled, but I've never found anything better for inspiration images. Extant garments are some of my favorite sources of information when it comes to garment construction; there are such great details of construction and workmanship. They also really speak to what people valued in the past--what kinds of garments were considered special or worthy of preservation can tell us a lot about who the people who created, wore, and saved them.
How about you? Do you have a favorite extant piece to share?
