So I put in a bid. And I won. And I paid, and I waited. And then it arrived, and it was BEAUTIFUL

Julie and her new white dress modeled it for me because my dress was a dark color.
I actually already owned one black lace shawl, and it was also an ebay steal. This one, if anything, was in better condition than the one I already had, and what I think is really neat is that there are a couple places where it has very obviously been mended--skillfully, but definitely mended. Which to me says that someone else owned, used, and loved the shawl enough to take really good care of it. How neat is that?

The internet tells me I should end my blog posts with a question to encourage discussion. It also tells me I should call you guys "dear readers" or "darlings" or something like that, but there's no way in hell that's gonna happen. I like you guys, but...no, sorry. Anyway, I might not be all about the fluffy nicknames, but I can probably handle a question. Do you have any amazing antique finds to share? I'm sure we'd all love to see them (I know I would!)
HOLY CRAP. I sooooo hate you. GREAT find!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'd hope it's full of holes... wouldn't be lace if it wasn't!
ReplyDeleteThis makes my recent ebay win of an early 19th century plain-ish bonnet veil for $30 look rather sad in comparison.
ReplyDeleteIronically, I found this while *looking for bonnet veils* and came up with absolutely nothing! So, in a way, you did better than I did. I still don't have a bonnet veil!
DeleteI actually found a crochet pattern on Ravelry that's very similar. Someday when I have time (and the skill with thread and the itty-bitty crochet hooks) I plan to make one. :) Gorgeous find!
ReplyDeleteOh my WOW!!! That is a seriously fabulous find! I am so happy for you! It is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Gina
beautiful :)
ReplyDeleteIt's official, you horrible girl. I'm drooling over your find over here! I am alternately happy you got that and sad that I didn't .:D My best ebay find to date has been 30 vintage sewing patterns (Childrens) for $12.00. I really should keep an eye on the lace my want for a black lace bonnet veil is high. -BethT from the sewing academy
ReplyDeleteDefinitely keep an eye on ebay--black lace tends to go for less than white, probably since it's not being marketed to the bridal set. I saw a black lace bonnet veil go for $12 the other day--no joke! It was beautiful, too.
Delete!!!!! I've been neglecting eBay, but that gives me a lot of hope! I'll start keeping watch!
DeleteWow, that is STUNNING
ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure I was watching that shawl and hoping it would go to someone who would love it! I'm glad you got it!
ReplyDeleteI once scored a bonnet veil for $15. It was being advertised as a cutter for doll clothing. I saved it in the name of history.
mmh My best ebay buy would be 2 full years of La Mode Illustrée, 1866 + 1868 with all color plates and patterns for 180 euro a piece and in a very good condition, only because the auction didn't have pictures, but the seller had 2 more up for bidding with pictures and they went for about 350 euro each.
ReplyDeleteBut let's not talk about all my bad, bad ebay buys...
That *is* pretty impressive! Sometimes it pays off to take a risk :)
DeleteYes it does.
DeleteThank you... but I wouldn't mind finding a shawl a beautiful as yours. You make really beautiful dresses. :D
